Evgen Bavcar--owns visions without seeing /

Evgen Bavcar, the Blind Photographer

Media can alter time / メディアは時間を変える

I think media has power to control time. Each medium has an unique way to alter the time.

The picture of  Dubai in 2008 was taken with Carotype prints technique from early 19C by French photographer Martin Becka. It looks like a future vision from 20 century.

Welcome Karaoke-Phoenix's violent shout! /

I joined welcome party for new students organized by the 2nd year students of photography school.  The senior class is mostly consist of female students but the freshman class is the opposite. The party is unexpectedly cheerful and fun.  I like that way, of course.  I love Phoenix's shout especially.  It seems that they should work fine together.  I think we should come up with collaborative project or something.     You can check the rest of pictures and the shout after this.

The Little Screens Series (Lee Friedlander)/

The Little Screens SeriesLee Friedlander
The Little Screens Series

Since I only have seen one or two images from "The Little Screens Series" by Lee Friedlander, I recognized those images as a part of his other series.  I realized that The Little Screens Series is a long time work from 60s to 70s by looking at images on  review of his show at "Hyper Real - Art and America around 1970" in Aachen, Germany on We Make Money Not Art. The various shapes of those old TV screens also give charms on the series of photography, but something else also make these "scenes with screens" be different and standing out.  I noticed that all of those screens show people or faces of people. I suppose those screens suggest existance of human in the scenes.

We Make Money Not Artのサイトでのレビューで改めてこれをフリートランダーの60年代から70年代にかけての一つの長いシリーズとして認識した。

Simon Starling exhibition in Hiroshima /

Simon Starling
Simon Starling

Sounds Interesting. The exhibition in Hiroshima is already over though.  I could not come to see the show but, I still can enjoy his concept.  I could hear the report of the show from Prof. Tsuda in his contemporary art theory class for master degree students of Nagoya University of Arts.  It already sounds interesting that Starling made a specialist of Noh mask make masks for his concept.  Moreover, he chose one of classic Noh stories to refer to Nuclear issue and money and art issues.  Choices of character are hilarious. James Bond, Enrico Fermi, Henry Moore, Joseph Herman Hirshhorn, Colonel Sanders, Atom Piece and so on..   He matches those characters to original classic characters of the Noh.  Whole thing is well designed with historical mapping.  It is also great that the classic Noh can be played by traditional Noh actors instantly because he only switched those masks.

Snowball Fight /

Even though it was snowing so much on the last Monday, I had classes to teach in the morning.  After the class, a lot of students were having fun with snowball fight during the lunch time.  We also found many snowmen on campus.  Many of them are originally shaped.  Snow is one of very unique and useful  temporary materials for sculpture.

spitz
new year

I am at my parents' house for this new year days.  It is nicer and warmer in Shima, Mie Japan than Ichinomiya Aichi Japan where I live. We went for a long walk to the sea shore.  As usual, Spica (my dog) did not like the sound of waves and always tried to get away from the ocean.  However It is one of the most relaxing day of the year.(even though the year 2011 has just begun)

Since this year will probably be one of the most memorable year of my life. It sure will be busy and challenging. My thinking process will gradually be changed too.  I suppose it is getting better though.

When You Tell Your thought, it becomes a thought. /

Jin Murata "a job in the morning" / 「
Jin Murata "a job in the morning" / 「

I participated a workshop by the poet, Jin Murata, my friend and one of the artist of our show. It was one of the event related to our exhibition “the memories of records"(Kiroku no Kioku).

At the beginning of the workshop, he read out the instruction to us as a poem.  The instruction consisted of the method of how you approach to create a poem.  I realize that at the end of the instruction paper there was a line says "Read out your poem to somebody" It moved me and made me think how I should see our thought in our minds.  When you read out to the poem to somebody, I think the poem become a poem.    Our thought as well, will become a thought when we tell our thought to somebody.  I might be able to say that if you are just thinking by yourself, you never think anything.

Technophobia /

There are certain number of people who do not like the latest technology.  Last week I met a student who would like to drop the class since she does not like computer. She told me that she liked taking moving images but editing with a computer.  She also told me that she does not like a mobile phone or other latest tech  gadgets.  It is perfectly ok that some people think that way.

However,  she watches TV and shoots video with video cameras.  The border line was not clear. She was honest about how she thinks about what we were doing.  I am wondering if she would spend 10 times longer period of time to edit films by hand even though they are simple and low-tech.

Amish hat, Spica /

It is about time we switch the rotation of our cloths.  I have been waiting for the time I can wear the amish hat I got in early summer.  Even with air conditioning it was way too hot to wear this beautiful wool fuelt hat for the summer of 2010.  I can feel the sense of autumn these days.  The weather is now easy on my fellow dog, Spica.

Here it comes! Fuji's new camera. /

Fuji: FinePix X100
Fuji: FinePix X100

Fuji announced their new digital rengefinder camera, FinePix X100.   This thing looks just like a good old rengefinder film camera even though it is a digital camera with 12MP APS-C sensor.

Since it has APS-C sized sensor and build in 23mm(35mm for 35mm format) bright F2 lens, it got a good soft out of focus effect.  Switchable optical and electronical finder is also amazing.  It looks just beautiful but,,, I still don't know if I would buy the thing. I wish they had one with interchangeable lens.   When would be the time for us to buy the ultimate compact camera for everyday use.

Embroidered Photos /

Embroidered Photo is already one of typical manipulation method of photography, I guess.  I even found some students of photography would try to do the technique because of some successful commercial use of the technique on fashion magazines.  These works by Maurizio Anzeri are simple and strong that remind me works of Francis Bacon.  They might help someone who would like to try the technique out.

New musical instruments /

1 New Instrument no.1

I am working on coming up with new musical instruments for MAKE: Ogaki Meeting (Sept.25-26) that is a DIY showcase event originated in the U.S.A.  The Ogaki Meeting is the first event of MAKE:Japan held outside of Tokyo.  We will join to the event as a group called "Soundamentalism" with our original DIY sound devices.  We also are going to have a live sound performance on Sunday the 26th.

Since we have mostly guys as main performers and audience as well I imagine, I asked Jin Murata to tried to invited a lady only for the performance. I suppose that would be helpful in many way.

Anyway I will have to bring in several instruments for exhibit because we are going to have something for the lady as well.  I came up with two new instruments this time.  I hope it looks ok to boys in Ogaki.

Good Buddha! /

The doctor told me the result of my fiber scope test of my stomach.  In conclusion, There should not be nothing serious going on.   He said "I would prescribe some stomach medicine and see how it work". Good god!

A couple days ago, I visited Gifu-Daibutsu (Huge Buddha statue in Gifu) and prayed for my good health. I did not visit the temple for prayer but for taking photos though.   These years, whenever I have chances to visit temples or shrines, I pray for me and my close ones' health.  I always add " If you give me a good health, I will handle the rest" at the end of my prayer.

Gifu Daibutsu by the way is one of the three greatest Buddha statue in Japan.  The statue is made with Bamboo and cray covered with paper of buddhism canon.  It has hollow structure with wood frame inside.  It is so well made that it does not look a paier-mache Buddha.  All the monk statues surrounding the buddha are also awesome.   It is simply a good place to visit.

(some pictures in the next section)

Are you serious? /

Canon introduced the world biggest CMOS sensor.  It seems that they are working on something might be striking someday but not tomorrow.  They just introduced 120 mega pixel APS-H CMOS sensor a couple weeks ago.  I think the one is not also something for tomorrow.  I am wondering what the company is looking at. The shape and size is not convenient for a camera.  I am wondering it could be used for satelite telescope or some kind of military instrument.  Anyway, the company is not looking at something that a good old camera company would be looking at.

I had to check my the esophagus and stomach this morning.  I have been having slight pain in my back and chest from time to time for a few weeks.  I was informed that recent fiber scopes are slender and are easier to swallow, however, they are still not.  I think what I had at Ichnomiya Citizen's hospital was the one at the bottom.  Well, it is ok if the result is ok.  They found some red part on the surface of my stomach.  It will take a week to see what it is.  I am just wishing myself a good luck.     To forget about that it is good to watch something like Perfume's summer festival performance.  The sunlight make me feel like nothing serious would happen.

Gazed after Carl Zeiss Planetarium IV /

I went to see the special session of the planetarium at Nagoya Science Museum.  Their planetarium projector was installed in 1962 when the science museum was founded.  It has been already 47years from the installation.  It was the best German projector at the time and it is still a great projector.  However, it is time to say good bye to the good old, beloved Carl Zeiss IV since they will have a whole new planetarium (Carl Zeiss new Universarium: http://www.zeiss.de/planetariums )and the new world biggest dorm for it next year.   A lot of planetarium fans stayed for a while even after the show taking pictures of the Zeiss IV.  Most of the audience can look back their childhood with shape and space of the planetarium since it has been here almost 50 years.  We are longing for the projector as we are longing for our good time.

Since my father used to work as a planetarian at this science museum, his younger colleagues let me take some photographs of projection.  In quiet dorm, it was sentimental experience with  their routine checking procedure.  (more photos on the next page)

A couple days ago, Canon Inc. announced their new APS-H size CMOS image sensor that delivers an image resolution of approximately 120 megapixels. It is such a leap from 16megapixels of their conventional APS-H size sensor.  However, it is understandable that could be possible since their smaller sensor cameras deliver more than 14 megapixel.  If the smaller sensor can have a great images with high resolution, you can just multiply that to make one big sensor with super high resolution.   What is amazing is it's speed that allow you take more than 9 frames of picture with this resolution in one second.  Even my Canon 5DII gives you about 60 MB image with 20 megapixel raw file. I suppose the 120 megapixel sensor gives you about 360 MB raw image.  9 pics of 360MB images in one second take up 3.24GB in one second.  Well it should only be used for highly demanding shooting, however at least you would like to buy 128G the biggest CF memory card which allow you to take up to about 350 raw images. You would also need another 10 external hard disks or something...  I am also wondering if there is a lens that can convince with the sensor's resolution.

Border of the land /

Every time I come to the sea. I imagine a picture of myself standing on the border of the land.  When you look down from the god's point of view, it seems that is like a miracle.  It should look like a tiny tiny bug or bacteria is on the edge of the water that is about to be drown.  The dog seems to know about that.  He was shaking every time wave hit my legs.

Is it illegal to take photos on the street? /

Nowadays, many of my students asked me the question, "Is it ok to take pictures of people on the street?"  My answer is "yes, it is ok to take photos of people on the street."   Public is too careful about so-called "one's portrait right" because of too much repetition about it on TV media.  However, when they travel in asian country they often take pictures of children and old guys faces on the street. It should originally be a moral issue but they actually care if it is illegal or not.  On the other hand, I always see a lot of images broadcasted on TV that should not have any permission from the person in the video.  For example, when wether forcast report the heat of the day, they usually broadcast the scene of a lot of people sweating and walking on the street.  Some of their faces are recognizable.    I am not going to claim on the fact.   From that, I assume that it is OK to shoot pictures on the street. (At least in Japan)   Here is an interesting article on Gizmodo.  It is already a belief that shooting pictures on the street makes you be a terrorist in the U.S.  Oh, here is more appropriate link, ha. ha.

Watch out and be ready to convince with the police even if there is no legal ground for it when you are  going to travel to the country.

Dedicating a performance to the god /

Dengaku/

I went to see "Takigi-noh" performance in Yamato, Gifu.    "Takigi-noh" is a kind of ritual dedication of noh performance that is supposed to be performed outdoor with the light of firewood.  "Kurusu-Zakura(Kurusu Cherry Tree)" is an original noh performance for this particular Myoken Shrine in Gifu.     "Kurusu-Zakura" performance was exciting but it was  amplified and lighted with technical staff from maybe TV and FM station or something.   I did not like that the sound was altered and the direction of their singing was messed up.   However, the style of movement of their body and music were simply beautiful.  Since We got there in the early afternoon, we could also get to see the dedication of "Dengaku & Shishimai" (dancing and music originally performed at agricultural festivals)  to the god of the shrine.    The Dengaku is not as famous as the "Kurusu-Zakura" but it is simply ritual and beautifully quiet.   It was impressive that almost all children watched the performance very quietly and calmly.    Without explanation and reputation, it seems to be  holy to everyone. Slackness from the summer heat / 夏枯れ

It is so hot.  Even with some shower in the morning, our tomato leaves turned their color be yellowish already.  The real blackberry ( not the Blackberry whichi will turn their UI to touch screen in near future) in our garden is almost dried out.

Facebook

I checked my Facebook account today.  I am not that good at keeping up with this type of thing, but tried to add some friends.   Facebook is not that popular in Japan compare with Mixi or something.   However, the Japanese people who join for Facebook seem to know how to deal with international relationship I guess.  After I accept friendship request, a friend from Malaysia wrote to me through Facebook.   It is a good move.

Atelier Non-Electric /

I saw a TV program about  "Atelier Non-Electric".   It is good to know that their concept is to invent technological devices that do not need electricity but is not anti-electric or anti-technology.   At first place, they sound being cheap mad scientists or something, but they are not.  Those inventions like their Non-Electric Frig Built at Mongolian Nomad's Gel or Non-electric dehumidifier are practical invention that are simple enough to be taught easily to people who lives in undeveloped area.  It is meaningful effort to think neutral about energy resorce for device.

A lot of attractions on the Weekend /

I went the world cosplay summit in Osu the last Saturday.  I met Jin Murata and walked around and shoot many pics.  Fukuoka and Kuwa-san, Yo-san came to join us too.  We shot a lot of pictures.  Jin even brought his "university owned" SLR with him to enjoy the whole thing.   I happened to meet my colleague from the photography school where I teach.  It's a small world.  I thought I would meet more students though.  After the festival, we went barbecue restaulant in Osu. The barbecue was just great!  Next day, I went a live music event of my student and motion picture event organized by another sutdent at Brazil Coffee in Kanayama, Nagoya.  Most of all events are consist of voluntary members and performers.  They all seems easy going event that are enjoyable because they have taste of summer vacation.

I taught a TAC workshop for companies at the University of Tokyo's School of Education to experience a workshop designed by an artist. This time, after drawing a picture of a place or room where you spent time as a child, the workshop begins with a discussion in pairs to enhance the details of that picture. This was an attempt to recall your "ordinary" life in the past, which you could not remember even if you thought about it alone. This is an extended workshop in which participants take on the role of the person they are talking to and "storytelling" the episodes that come up during the conversation as their own story. The workshop went fine. All the participants worked very hard despite their busy schedules. We are currently compiling a book of the stories completed at the workshop. The experience is to create a "constellation book" with the individual stories extracted as first-person "I" stories and to read them and share memories as stories.
